Gadget used to turn off immobilisers

KUALA LUMPUR: It was made to repair vehicles, but is now being used by syndicates to steal cars.

The hand-held device costing RM10,000 was invented as a tool to diagnose mechanical faults and is not a controlled item, said Federal CID director Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Bakri Zinin.

“It is a device we cannot control as it is used by mechanics. It is even sold at flea markets in Jalan Pasar and Petaling Street,” he added.

A quick web search showed that the device could be bought online as well.

The high-tech tool was designed to plug remotely into the computer controlling a vehicle's fuel injection system.

Once in the system, the device can manipulate the car's alarm system as well.

Mandatory jail term for reckless drivers being mulled

According to reports, the government is considering enforcing a mandatory jail term for reckless drivers who cause deaths in road accidents, if it’s deemed that such a move can help reduce road accidents and fatality rates.

“If the jail term can reduce the percentage of fatalities on the road, then we have no choice. Educating and appealing alone does not seem to work,” Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein told reporters two days ago, in response to Road Safety Council member Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye’s proposal that the government impose such a move.

Lee had earlier issued the call for the mandatory jail sentence to be carried out after the 25th Ops Sikap saw a 63% increase in traffic summonses being issued compared to the previous operation.

Hishammuddin said that enforcement agencies and the government have tried their best to educate the public through awareness programmes and direct appeals, but the public’s attitude hadn’t changed, with the fatality rate increasing.

Reverse psychology used in Ops Sikap to reduce accidents during festive period

PETALING JAYA: Motorists returning to their hometowns for the Chinese New Year holidays may be surprised to see signs urging them to speed.

But that is just half of the message on signboards to be placed at “black spots” and strategic locations along highways which reads: Pandu Laju, Maut Menunggu (Drive Fast, Death Awaits).

Reverse psychology is the latest strategy used in Ops Sikap to reduce accidents during festive seasons when traffic on trunk roads is much heavier than usual.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar, who launched Ops Sikap 25 in Subang yesterday, said that 97 accident-prone areas had been identified.

Police teams will be stationed there throughout the campaign ending on Jan 30 to ensure safe driving and to help traffic flow.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha, meanwhile, urged the public to use public transport when returning to their hometowns.

Ops Sikap 25 campaign kicks off

KUALA LUMPUR: The 25th Ops Sikap campaign kicked off with millions of cars expected to hit the road during the long festive break.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar launched the campaign, which ends on Jan 30, at Persiaran Plus in Subang here yesterday.

Ismail said police had identified 97 accident-prone areas throughout the country and policemen would be stationed there.

He said the officers would do a daily analysis of the areas to see what new approaches could be used to reduce accidents.

Ismail said accidents would keep increasing if the attitude of road users did not change for the better.

“Wherever you go, the main factor that contributes to road fatalities is the drivers' attitudes.

“We have enforced the law and advocated road safety but nothing will change until the people's attitude changes as the police can't be everywhere,” he said.

Proton-GM talks confirmed, at preliminary stages now

National carmaker Proton has confirmed news reports that it is in talks with Detroit-based General Motors (GM). Replying to a query from Bursa Malaysia, Proton said that talks are only at a preliminary stage and there’s nothing to announce for now.

“The Board of Directors of Proton Holdings Berhad wishes to inform that talks with GM are only at a preliminary stage and as such warrants no announcement at this point in time. Should there be further developments that warrant an announcement, the Company hereby undertakes to make necessary disclosure in accordance with the relevant requirements,” Proton told the stock exchange.

People started talking about it last week, when The Edge reported that Proton was in talks to sell 40% to 50% stake in its underused Tanjung Malim plant to GM for between RM700 million to RM800 million. Sources quoted by the report said that if the deal goes through, GM could potentially invest RM300 million worth of equipment in the facility.

Proton chairman Datuk Mohd Nadzmi Mohd Salleh, when confirming his bid for Khazanah’s shares in Proton, added fuel: “There is some truth in the report. However, GM has all along been interested in Proton even when I was the head during the 1990s,” he said.

Automatic transmission driving licence from May 2012

KUALA LUMPUR: The automatic transmission driving licence will be implemented nationwide in May after the driving curriculum is revised, said Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri.

He said the new driving curriculum would enable learner drivers to learn to drive and take a test in an automatic car.

"The ministry is not in a hurry to implement the automatic car driving test to be fair to driving school operators.

"We need to give them time as they have to replace manual cars with automatic cars and this is costly," he told Bernama.

He said, despite the introduction of the automatic transmission driving licence, learner drivers could choose to learn and take a test either in a manual or an automatic car.

Abdul Rahim said that more people, especially older learners and women, would prefer to drive in a car with automatic gears as it was easier.

On the new driving curriculum, Abdul Rahim said it would focus on producing discerning and disciplined motorists to help reduce fatal accidents as human factors were the root cause behind 60 to 70 percent of the accidents.

"Previously, our curriculum emphasised driving skills and knowledge of the highway code, but now we want to churn out considerate motorists," he said.

On the demerit system known as 'Kejara', he said there was no proposal to replace the system as it was still relevant and used in many countries where drivers who achieved 15 demerit points the first time would have their license suspended for six months. - Bernama

A charity have successfully run down by our club members and non members which make a great history toward this year 2011.

MAA'HAD TAHFIZ KASYFUL ULUM is located at Penang Jalan Kebun Bunga in the compound of Surau Al-Islah. They have 30 students for religious study and all are orphan students. Recently all of them located at different place and that place have been demolished due to "tanah wakaf".

This is the first time the students from Maa'had Tahfiz Kasyful Ulum meet car club's charity and members joining them. All of them was very excited to see our club members presence in their place.

Below is the program which we conduct on the said day.

12.30 - 1.30 - We did gift giving to students while picturing with the students.

1.30 - 2.15 - Start to take our lunch together with the students.

- Muslims members go ahead with their prayer at noon after the lunch at Surau Al-Islah.

- Group picturing season took part before we move on to the next program in front of Surau Al-Islah.

2.30 - 3.00 - We fetch the students to Padang Polo with our beloved rides.

3.10 - 4.30 - Futsal game with the students and our club members together.

4.30 - 5.00 - We send back the students to Surau Al-Islah and finaly we all move back.

Proton Saga FLX SE launched – RM49,899 OTR!

Ah, while all the action seems to be in Tokyo, along pops up something more relevant and closer to home. Proton has announced the introduction of the Saga FLX SE, which we “previewed” last week, all thanks to an erstwhile reader and a leaked brochure.

Danny’s story already carries most of the tech details, so the big news is really about the photos of the car and the price – the 1.6 litre Campro and CVT-equipped vehicle rolls in at RM49,899 (metallic) and RM49,449 (solid). There are only two shades, the Fire Red as seen in the photos (which is the metallic), and Solid White.

Priced RM2,900 above the current selling 1.6 litre automatic Saga FL, the Saga FLX SE features eight exterior and three interior changes. It’s fitted with 15-inch alloy wheels, an complete factory-fitted body kit in contrasting grey, fog lamps and smoked-finished combination rear lamps.

Meanwhile, the 108 hp and 150 Nm vehicle’s interior gets a healthy dollop of leather; hide is to be found on the seats, steering wheel, door ornament as well as the parking brake and gearshift levers.

The company is hoping to shift around 500 units of the Saga FLX SE per month. Oh, and customers who have ordered a Saga and are still waiting for their car to be delivered can opt to change their booking to the FLX SE at the respective showroom in which the booking was originally made.

If you’re thinking of viewing the FLX SE, don’t rush out just yet, because the car will only be at all Proton showrooms from tomorrow, December 1.

Proton-Mitsubishi strategic collaboration – Proton expects to ink deal by year-end to build Mitsubishi sedan models

Following the news in September about Proton and Mitsubishi discussing a broad ranging collaboration, Bernama reports that Proton expects to seal a JV agreement with Mitsubishi Motors by year-end to build Mitsubishi sedan models at its Tanjung Malim plant.

The agreement will see the manufacture of 60,000 Mitsubishi units annually, which is about 90% of the plant’s production capacity, Proton MD Datuk Seri Syed Zainal Abidin said, adding that the plant is currently operating at between 56% and 58% capacity.

Syed Zainal was briefing reporters after the announcement of the company’s Q2 2011/2012 financial year results yesterday, which saw the Group recording a lower pre-tax profit of RM47.524 million for the six months ended September 30, 2011, compared to RM185.914 million made in the corresponding period last year.

The lower profit was largely attributed to higher spending by Lotus Group International Limited, mainly on capability enhancement, infrastructure development and marketing costs, in line with its five-year business transformation plan.

Meanwhile, despite a second-half downtrend forecast by the Malaysian Automotive Association, Syed Zainal said that Proton would overcome it with the introduction of its Saga FLX Special Edition in December, the report added.

He said that 2012 was set to be an exciting year for the company, with the introduction of four models, the Exora Bold and Exora Prime, Inspira R3 and the P3-21A sedan.

Syed Zainal also said that Proton is set to expand its presence in the Chinese market – under a memorandum of understanding it has signed with Hawtai Motor Group, it is slated to sell four Proton models under the Hawtai badge.

COMING SOON! Proton Saga FLX SE 1.6L with CVT leaked

The ultimate Proton Saga is coming soon! Thanks to reader Ali, we have scans of a Proton brochure featuring “The new Saga FLX SE 1.6L with CVT”. Proton has thrown everything at the name, and it’s a mouthful, but all we need to know is that this upcoming variant is the range topper, the SE of the current Saga FLX range, equipped with the Campro 1.6L engine and CVT gearbox.

Currently, the Saga FLX with continuous variable transmission (CVT) is only available with a 1.3L Campro (launched in July, read our test drive report here). Proton has a 1.6-litre powered Saga – the Executive 1.6L – but that one was launched before the FLX with CVT, so it comes with a four-speed torque converter automatic ‘box.

So with this new FLX SE variant, Proton is marrying what’s good from both cars (1.6L + CVT) and sweetens it further with the usual sporty SE add ons.

Upon closer inspection, the FLX SE’s 1.6L Campro puts out 108 hp at 5,750 rpm and 150 Nm at 4,000 rpm. The current Executive 1.6L with 4AT makes 110 hp at 6,500 rpm and 148 Nm at 4,000 rpm. Nothing significant, except that peak power is made 750 rpm lower in the CVT equipped FLX SE. The variance seen here is probably due to the engine being retuned to match the CVT.

RAC Future Car Challenge Brighton to London: Proton wins two awards, Gordon Murray T.27 is overall winner

We’re in London now where the RAC Future Car Challenge 2011 finished yesterday. The 64 cars, which included the best electric powered and alternative fuel green vehicles around, started the 92 km journey from Brighton to London, where the challenge ended at Pall Mall. All contestants then drove to a blocked off Regent Street, where the cars of tomorrow parked back-to-back to with the cars from the good old days.

The vintage cars, some over 100 years old, were in town to participate in the annual London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, and got plenty of attention from the locals and tourists alike. Even better, many of their owners were dressed to match the period in which their cars roamed the streets. A sight to behold, but also much white engine smoke to inhale!

A gallery post on that when I return home. After a few hours to collate the results, we all gathered at the prize giving gala dinner at the RAC’s grand old building in Pall Mall. Our table, the only Asians in the room, had plenty to celebrate, after it was announced that Proton won two awards – the Most Efficient Multi-Purpose Car (Prototype) and the Best Overall Extended-Range Vehicle (E-REV). Both were courtesy of the Exora REEV. The Best E-REV award was shared with the Toyota Prius Plug In Hybrid.

RAC Future Car Challenge Brighton to London: Proton targets three category wins, Persona REEV tipped to star

We’re in Brighton, England, to witness the RAC Future Car Challenge from this charming seaside town to London. The race starts early tomorrow morning here, and we’ve just got back from the Hilton Metropole, the base for all participating teams. Team Proton is now charging up its three entries in the hotel carpark – the Saga EV, Exora REEV and Persona REEV.

As a recap, this is the second year of the FCC, which runs the opposite direction of RAC’s famous Veteran Car Run, and one day before it. Last year, Proton made everyone stand up and notice when they won the “Best Range Extender EV” award with the Exora REEV. The Saga EV also participated, and was close to winning its EV category. This year, both cars that were co-developed with Fraser Nash return to the challenge, accompanied by the just completed Persona REEV.

EXCLUSIVE: Battery-powered Proton Saga EV driven in UK

Greetings from England! We’re here braving the wet and cold weather to witness the RAC Future Car Challenge from Brighton to London. The challenge (it’s not a race, according to organisers Royal Automobile Club of Pall Mall London) happens this Saturday in the UK, one day before the RAC’s famous London to Brighton Veteran Car Run.

Just as the Veteran Car Run celebrates the great cars of yesterday, the Future Car Challenge seeks to promote, demo and challenge clean and green cars – the cars of the future. The FCC also runs the opposite direction of the veteran run, starting from the coastal town and heading to the capital city.

This is the second year of the RAC Future Car Challenge, which seeks to find the most efficient and least energy consuming cars in different categories. National carmaker Proton, which won the “Best Range Extender EV” award last year with the Exora REEV, is entering three cars this year – Saga EV, Exora REEV and Persona Elegance REEV, the latter a newly built car with the same drivetrain as the MPV.

These cars were developed in partnership with Frazer Nash Research Ltd, a British based R&D company specialising in electric vehicle powertrains. Earlier today, we visited FN’s headquarters in Surrey to learn more about the company and its relationship with Proton. We also got to sample the Exora REEV and Saga EV at a small test track. Having already driven the Exora REEV last year (click here to read our exclusive test drive report), I paid attention to the electric Saga.

Proton’s electric cars to hit the roads in 2013

KUALA LUMPUR: Proton Holdings Bhd is looking to commercialise its electric vehicles in 2013.

The vehicles, which are now in the test fleet stage, will be brought to the commercial front to cater to an increasing demand for full electric cars, Proton Holdings director Datuk Zainuddin Che Din said.

“Currently, we have already delivered three Proton Saga EV and five units of the Proton Exora Range Extender EV to the Government for the test fleet.

“In the process of commercialising the vehicle, we are looking to provide at least 200 Range Extenders and 150 Proton Saga EV’s to the Government by the end of next year,” he said here yesterday.

He said the cars would be competitively priced once commercialised.

The Proton Saga EV is expected to be sold at RM70,000 and the Proton Exora Range Extender at about RM100,000.

“The price will be cheaper and competitive for a full electric car in the country,” said Zainuddin, who is also the project director of Proton’s Green Tech Department.

He said that to accommodate the needs of the electric cars once commercialised, Proton and the Government were working on a mechanism to build infrastructure to place charging centres.

Mention Proton, and more often than not the “power window issue” will crop up from both detractors and those who have experienced it themselves. Proton MD Datuk Seri Syed Zainal Abidin admits that he has been obsessed with the power window issue since he came in five years ago.

The man points out that Proton has long turned the corner in this, and current gen cars are no longer bugged with power window problems. Generally, Defects Per Unit (DPU) has dropped to 0.26 in August 2011 from 8.0 in 2006/07.

But one can only do so much to convince 28 million people, as Syed Zainal said, so Proton has come up with the Power Window Promise to put this issue to rest. The main component in this promise is the Power Window Lifetime Warranty. A very unique warranty for a very unique situation in a very unique market!

Yours truly was in Singapore last month to watch the only night race in the F1 calendar. It was a great weekend of not only track action, but carnival fun, since the Singapore GP is more like one big party with a race running around it. Sunday’s headlining act Linkin Park was brilliant, showing great energy despite getting on in years – I enjoyed it as much as their Merdeka Stadium gig years ago. Unfortunately, I missed Shakira’s swiveling hips.

I thought that was fun, until I saw this video. It’s Part 1 of a five-part series chronicling The Transporter’s journey to Singapore. He’s no Jason Statham, but even the stone faced cool driver would have to envy Hanis Salleh’s ‘precious cargo’. It doesn’t get any better than this I think – Yasmin Hani, Diana Danielle and Jojo Struys. Damn!

By the way, Hanis is the winner of Proton’s The Transporter online contest, which was open to all who purchased a new Proton or serviced their Protons at an official centre. Besides the company of the three beauties, he also enjoyed an all expenses paid trip as well as money can’t buy F1 moments.

No petroleum surprise from Budget 2012

Budget 2012: Petroleum product subsidies continue as is

Among the items mentioned in Budget 2012 is the continuance of subsidies for petroleum products.

For every litre of RON 95, the actual price is RM2.75, and the price of RM1.90 at the pump translates to a subsidy of 85 sen, or 31% of the actual price.

Diesel has an actual price of RM2.66, and the RM1.80 retail price works out to a subsidy of 86 sen, which works out to 32%.

As for cooking gas, every 14 kg tank is actually priced at RM48.02, and the retail price of RM26.60 means that the Government subsidy works out to RM21.43 or 45% of the actual price. We’ll have more updates on related items as we go along.

DHL in talks with Proton regarding electric vehicles

Two weeks ago, national carmaker Proton handed eight electric vehicles (EVs) to the government for running trials with various ministries, which included three Saga EV and five Exora REEV (Range Extender Electric Vehicle) models.

As Proton works towards mass-production of these EVs in 2013, they have an interested fleet customer already. Global logistics provider DHL is exploring the possibility of using Proton EVs in Malaysia. DHL Asia Pacific business development VP Christopher Ong said the company has already initiated talks with Proton.

“We are still in discussion with them and hopefully we will be able to test one of their electrical vehicles, maybe early next year,” he told the media briefing yesterday, adding that this move was in line with the company’s strategy of reducing its total carbon emissions up to 30% by 2020.

Mr Ong hopes that the government will play a role in reducing our carbon footprint, suggesting measures such as imposing carbon tax to encourage people to reduce their CO2 emissions, as well as partnering with the industry to develop facilities for EVs such as charging stations. These would help accelerate Malaysia’s target of reducing carbon emissions by 40% by 2020, he points out.

Proton today handed eight electric vehicles to the government for running trials with various ministries, as the national automaker works its way towards mass-production of these in 2013. The vehicles are three Saga EV and five Exora REEV (Range Extender Electric Vehicle) models.

The vehicles were presented by Proton chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Nadzmi Mohd Salleh to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in Putrajaya. Present at the handover ceremony was former PM Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed, who is Proton’s adviser.

The initiative is also part of the Fleet Test Vehicle Programme, which is a joint effort by Proton, the Ministry of International trade and Industry (MITI) and the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water (KeTTHA), which aims to assess the potential of green technology as well as the infrastructure of hybrid and electric vehicles in Malaysia.

The five Exora REEVs are set to be used by the Prime Minister’s office, MITI, KeTTHA, the Ministry of Transport (MOT) and well as the Ministry of Finance (MOF), while the three Saga EVs will see service with MITI, KeTTHA and the MOT.

Proton will provide charging stations for the EVs at the Prime Minister’s Office and also on the premises of the other four ministries involved in the programme, as well as home chargers for the households of the designated drivers of the vehicles.

KUALA LUMPUR: Road users have been reminded to plan their travel before returning to their villages and hometowns for Raya to prevent the roads from becoming "a sea of unmarked graves".

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said, amidst the excitement of celebrating Hari Raya with their families and friends back home, they must be prepared physically and mentally as a little loss of concentration could cause tragedy.

"I am personally concerned and sad over cases of fatal road accidents and the suffering of others involved in these accidents.

"When we talk about road safety, it's always related to road accidents and it's a tragedy even if there's only one accident. I believe road accidents can be reduced if the drivers pay more attention to safety aspects and practise courteous driving," he said in his video-recorded special message delivered at the National Defence University of Malaysia, here, Tuesday.

Proton Saga FLX 1.3L launched – CVT, ABS and EBD on

Proton has officially launched the Saga FLX 1.3L, which we managed to check out in the showroom over the weekend. The car’s entry into the market was announced today, in both manual and six-speed CVT drivetrain options and two variant forms – Standard and Executive.

Going with the FLX 1.3L Executive variant bags a list of added features, notably driver and passenger air-bags along with ABS and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD). There’s no mention about any change to the engine’s output, so the assumption is that one continues on as is.

The introduction of the car follows on the company’s earlier announcement in June declaring the successful development and integration of CVT technology with its CamPro engine.

The transmission change improves the drivability and responsiveness of the car without compromising its power, said Proton’s MD Datuk Seri Syed Zainal Abidin. “Because of the lighter build of the engine, along with the ‘stepless’ gear transition that the CVT provides, the Saga FLX delivers a fuel consumption drop of 4% in an urban driving environment, with consumption dropping up to 10% when driven on highways,” he said.

“The utilisation of CVT technology has a far reaching impact to the consumer. Other than the fuel saving, the smoothness and reliability that CVT provides allows the engine to run at an optimum level, thus resulting in less engine fatigue and improving its long term durability,” he added.

Along with the new drivetrain and ABS/EBD comes a new colour as well – Elegant Brown joins the existing options of Tranquility Black, Genetic Silver, Solid White and Blue Rock in the shade lineup.

Pricing-wise, the FLX 1.3L starts from RM38,598 for the Standard manual version right up to RM44,998 for the Executive CVT variant. The Saga FLX 1.3L is now available for bookings and can be viewed at all Proton showrooms nationwide.

Proton Saga FLX with CVT and ABS seen at showroom!

It is indeed an interesting Sunday afternoon for us, as we received news that the Proton Saga FLX is now available for public viewing at a Proton showroom in Kelana Jaya (within the Giant supermarket). More important than being able to view the car, is the fact that we now have more juicy information to share with you. First of all, the Saga FLX with CVT is available in two trim lines. It starts off with the FLX 1.3 Standard which also comes with a manual transmission.

This is followed by the FLX 1.3 Executive, also available with a manual transmission as well. Lets talk about the former shall we. The FLX 1.3 Standard uses a 6-speed CVT and the transmission has something called an SAT Switch which stands for Stepped Automatic Transmission which sort of simulates the feel of a standard 6-speed automatic transmission. This switch is located beside the gear lever.

Based on the Saga FL (AT) Standard, everything else remains the same according to the sales person, with the exception of the headlights. The headlights on the FLX seem to feature verticle design lines on the sides, closer to the front grille. The other thing to note is that the FLX 1.3 Standard with CVT does not feature ABS. Airbags are also not part of the safety feature list as well.

The FLX 1.3 Executive on the other hand comes with ABS which allows you to steer your car while performing emergency braking. There is also EBD or also known as Electronic Brake Force Distribution which adjusts brake force applied on each wheel.

Other than ABS and EBD, the Executive additionally comes with driver and passenger airbags, seat belt with pre-tensioners, steering wheel with audio controls, height adjustable driver’s seat, electric door mirrors, front fog lamps, a rear spoiler and finally side protector moulding. Also included is a multipurpose container.

The entire FLX range is available in five body colour options including Solid White, Tranquality Black, Genetic Silver, Blue Rock and finally Elegant Brown which is what we have here. Now for the pricing bit. Proton has yet to release official figures but according to the sales person, the FLX 1.3 Standard with CVT is likely to be priced at RM41,998.00 OTR which is about RM1,000 more than the 1.3 (AT) Standard. The same RM1,000 price bump is also expected for the FLX 1.3 Executive, giving an estimated price tag of RM44,298.00 OTR. The FLX is now available for pre-bookings but at the moment we are unable to confirm when deliveries will start.

Nevertheless, something tells us it might be right before the Hari Raya celebrations. The sales person also mentioned that most Proton showrooms should be equipped with at least one Saga FLX display unit.

Proton Saga to finally come with ABS?

The Proton Saga FLX we talked about earlier may have more than one new thing going for it. The car is said to be equipped with a six-speed CVT drivetrain, which is surely big news for the entry-level Proton when it comes about into the market.

The engine bay photo reveals another little surprise, though it isn’t obvious upon first glance – we only spotted it upon closer inspection.

It’s an ABS brake pump located on the left side of the bay (it’s at the bottom, on the extreme left, in the photo). The shape of the entire assembly – the ABS body, brake fluid pressure pump and brake lines – is unmistakable.

To our knowledge, the Saga has never come with ABS, and there was no mention of it in the FL 1.6 Executive when that was introduced a couple of months back, so this looks very much like a big add-on feature to the car, and one that will undoubtedly be welcomed by consumers.

The question is of course whether ABS – and correspondingly, EBD and BA – will now be a standard production feature, albeit for the high-line versions, working its way on to the likes of the FL 1.6 Executive, or just something unique to something like the FLX?

Does the X suffix on that one mean Extra, signifying a range-topping Saga?

Proton Saga FLX – this one wears a CVT transmission

Proton is really ramping up things on the CVT front, by the looks of it. Just recently the company announced that it will be introducing Continuous Variable Transmission in its upcoming range of vehicles.

Now, a check on the Prosboc, or the Proton Saga BLM Owner’s Club, page on Facebook reveals a very interesting post made yesterday – a Saga FLX, which is equipped with a CVT drivetrain, and comments there say it is a six-speed unit.

There’s no accompanying info on the car, so we can’t say if the Saga FLX runs with a 1.6 or 1.3 litre powertrain. In May, there was a pre-facelift Saga that was used as a test mule for the CVT transmission, and that one had a 1.3 mill.

In any case, the batch of photos on the post give a far better view of that which is new and brewing at Proton – and is a clear indication that the adoption of the tech is going to be big.

Proton Holdings Bhd grabbed the best people's car and best value for money family car awards at the Asian Auto - Auto Industry Awards 2011.

Proton Saga FaceLift (FL) 1.6L won in the best people's car category and Proton Inspira 1.8 grabbed the best value for money award for the family car category.

RON97 price dropped by 10 sen to RM2.80 per liter

For the first time since RON97 was put on a ‘controlled market float’ in July last year, the price of the higher octane fuel has been reduced by 10 sen from RM2.90 per liter to RM2.80 per liter. The last change was on the 5th of May, where it was hiked 20 sen. The ‘mainstream’ RON95 fuel remains at RM1.90 per liter, while both petroleum diesel and B5 biodiesel (currently only available in Putrajaya) are sold at RM1.80 per liter.

Biodiesel B5 Ready in Malaysia Now!

Environmentally friendly biodiesel now on sale

PUTRAJAYA: Biodiesel is now available in the market. Beginning this month until October, the supply of the new fuel will be available in stages starting at Putrajaya followed by Malacca, Negri Sembilan, Kuala Lumpur and Selangor respectively.

Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Tan Sri Bernard Dompok launched the B5 biodiesel programme at the Petronas station at Precint 9 here yesterday.

With this, all five Petronas stations and one Shell station here will be dispensing the fuel.

B5 is a blend of 95% regular petroleum-based diesel and 5% biodiesel which can be used in normal diesel engine vehicles without any modifications. It will be sold at the same price as regular diesel at RM1.80 per litre.

Dompok said that the B5 price mechanism would be regulated and determined by the Finance Ministry.

“The rolling out of the B5 programme will not cause any price changes as the Government will continue providing subsidies to ensure that the B5 will be at the same cost as regular diesel,” he said.

“The production of the B5 is more expensive but the cost is absorbed by the Government,” he added.

Malaysian Palm Oil Board director general Datuk Dr Choo Yuen May said the fuel is more environmental friendly compared to regular diesel.

Proton introduces ’60 Minutes Express Service’ at 21 outlets – if they exceed the time, you don’t have to pay!

To enhance customer service and satisfaction, Proton has introduced the 60 Minutes Express Service programme, initially available at 21 service centres nationwide from today. Under this initiative, Proton promises regular maintenance service in 60 minutes, including a free 18-point quality and safety check. Should they exceed the promised one-hour, you won’t have to pay a cent.

“A frequent complaint we receive from customers is that it takes too long to service their Proton. More often this is attributed to the number of vehicles that are being attended to at the service centre at any one particular time. In order to address this, we now have dedicated service advisors to attend customers, dedicated technician to work on the vehicles, and dedicated service bays to get the job done,” said Proton Edar CEO Mohamad Shukor Ibrahim.

“It’s much more than just changing the lubricants, oil and air filters but a detailed service check-up. As we continue to improve our services across all areas, we will be working aggressively to reduce the servicing time even further. And while customers wait for their car to be serviced, they can also enjoy our warm hospitality and take advantage of our WiFi facility,” he added.

The 60 Minutes Express Service programme is only available via appointment from Mondays to Fridays from 8.00am to 5.15pm, and is only applicable for basic maintenance service which includes lubricant change. Look out for a 60 Minutes Express Service logo or call Proton i.care at 1800-88-0888 to find out which centres are included. The programme will soon be extended to cover all Proton Edar service centres.

Minister for Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the decision was made in the people's interest but the government would continue with the subsidy rationalisation study.

Proton Saga 1.6 B-Line M/T now available for booking at Proton Edar’s website!

The Proton Saga 1.6 liter B-Line with manual transmission is now available for public booking on Proton Edar’s website. The B-Line M/T listed at RM39,000 is the sole 1.6 liter model on sale, and is only available in Chilli Red. That’s about roughly a RM3k premium over the 1.3 liter B-Line M/T.

No specs for the B-Line 1.6L M/T have been made known on the site but based on various ads placed on online classifieds: it has power windows for the front, air conditioning, an alarm system and a CD player so it should satisfy the bare requirements of creature comforts, but with no safety features as there is no airbag.

The car comes with steel wheels so if you want to spend some money you can quickly junk them and put something else on to match the more powerful engine.

Interestingly the cheapest and most affordable N-Line which was priced at RM31.5k seems to be completely gone from Proton Edar’s website now.

It is not unusual for car manufacturers to launch a car model with the very baseline model priced without profit or even at a loss to draw customers to showrooms, and then later get the sales staff to try to sell them the more profitable trim levels. This baseline model will then be phased out later.

Also, is it just me or have the prices changed since launch?

Kelantan vs Petronas: Court to hear state's appeal on May 26

KUALA LUMPUR: The Court of Appeal will hear on May 26, the appeal by the Kelantan state government against a ruling allowing the federal government to be an intervenor in its suit against Petronas over oil royalty.

The court will also hear another appeal by the state government over the High Court's refusal to transfer the suit back to the New Commercial Court (NCC).

The High Court has set May 30 for case management of the suit pending the appeal, counsel Rishwant Singh, representing Petronas, told reporters after meeting High Court Judge Datin Zabariah Mohd Yusof in chambers when the case came up for management Friday.

Senior Federal Counsel Datin Azizah Nawawi is representing the federal government while counsel Alan Gomez is acting for the Kelantan state government.

Rishwant also said the court set the same day for mention of the application by Petronas and the federal government to try the preliminary issues on a point of law before proceeding with the hearing of the suit.

On March 22, Justice Zabariah granted the federal government's application to be an intervenor in the suit and to be part of the suit as the second defendant.

She had, on March 31, rejected the state government's application for the suit to be transferred back to the NCC.

The suit was initially filed at the NCC, but will now be heard at the New Civil Court.

In the suit filed on Aug 30, last year, the Kelantan government named Petronas as the sole defendant for alleged breach of contract relating to cash payments to the state over oil revenue.

In the statement of claim, the state government among others, is seeking an order to compel Petronas to make full and truthful disclosure of all facts relating to cash payments payable to Kelantan, including for the period when petroleum was produced, found or obtained off the coast of Kelantan, areas or blocks from where petroleum was found and obtained, and the total sum of cash payments that should be paid to Kelantan.

The state government also demanded that all outstanding cash payments determined by the court must be paid within one month of the court order.

In the suit, the state government explained that the Kelantan Petroleum Agreement signed on May 9, 1975 clearly stated that Petronas should pay in cash five per cent of oil revenue, either from exploration onshore or offshore.

It said that a clause of the agreement stated that the payment should be made in cash twice a year on or before March 1, or on or before Sept 1 and the payment should continue until the oil deposits obtained from the state had been exhausted. - Bernama

B5 biodiesel scheme to start with Putrajaya

PETALING JAYA: The Government is set to implement the B5 biodiesel programme next month starting with Putrajaya, Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Tan Sri Bernard Dompok said.

“The programme will be introduced in stages, starting from Putrajaya, before its full implementation at all petrol stations nationwide,” he told reporters yesterday after launching the Palm International Nutra-Cosmeceutical Conference.

He said the price mechanism for B5 biodiesel would be regulated and fixed by the Finance Ministry.

“The price will not burden the people and the Government will ensure that it will be affordable to everyone,” he added.

The Government introduced the B5 blend programme that involves the blending of 5% biodiesel with 95% fossil fuel, which is suitable for diesel engine vehicles and was initially scheduled for launch in January.

Khairy: Don’t increase price of RON95

PETALING JAYA: Umno Youth has urged the Government to refrain from increasing the price of RON95 petrol as the public was already burdened with the increasing inflation.

Its chief Khairy Jamaluddin said cost saving measures and increased productivity takes priority over any move to reduce fiscal expenditure, including reducing fuel subsidies.

“Umno Youth recommends that the nation's resources be fully explored and utilised first, in conjunction with measures to increase efficiency and enhance value of assets,” the Rembau MP said in a blog post.

IPOH: The prices of all petroleum products, including RON95 petrol, will be reviewed in June, said Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob on Tuesday.

He said the price revision, to be conducted by the ministry and other agencies such as the finance ministry and the Performance Management & Delivery Unit (Pemandu), would determine whether the prices would be maintained or increased, depending on the government's subsidies.

"According to Pemandu's subsidy rationalisation plan, there will be a revision every six months for subsidies on all products.

"The last revision we had for diesel, LPG and RON95 was in December, last year.

Govt cannot guarantee fuel prices will remain the same

BERA: The Government cannot guarantee that the prices of petrol, diesel and gas will remain the same if global crude oil prices continue to rise, said Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

Ismail said the Government is expected to fork out RM17bil in fuel subsidy following an increase in the price of crude oil in the global market.

"We cannot assure that the prices will remain the same, including RON 95 petrol, diesel and gas. The prices will be reviewed by a subsidy rationalisation committee every six months. Last year, the subsidy for fuel was RM10.3bil," he told reporters after opening the Bera Division's Pemuda, Wanita and Puteri Umno meetings here Monday.

He said the petrol and diesel price would be decided after the committee's meeting in June.

"If the Government continues to bear the additional subsidy, its deficit will increase," he said. - Bernama

Be wary of snatch thieves’ tricks, women drivers told

MIRI: Lone women drivers are advised to be wary of snatch thieves who use tricks to pounce on their unsuspecting victims.

Mayor Lawrence Lai gave the advice after he received two complaints via email from victims of such snatch thieves.

According to Lai, the thieves, as described by the victims, were a group of foreign-looking men who often targeted women who travelled alone and who parked their car under shady trees or at obscure corners.

The thieves would normally throw eggs, dirt or even grease on the windscreen of the victim’s car. Once they got their victims distracted, they quickly snatched the handbags and fled.

“So far the police have not identify any suspect. Thus, I wish to alert everyone, men or women, to be extra careful when they go to any isolated places or parking areas.”

So there you are, taking delivery of your spanking new car. You’re excited about it, of course, as you drive off from the showroom, but instead of pottering around discovering more about it or just enjoying the moment, you’re more likely to contend with looking for a petrol station nearby, because the fuel tank is just about empty.

It happens with virtually all new cars, no matter what the brand. So, yes, I’ve got a gripe about it, and my question is, why can’t you (who sell those cars) put in at least half a tank’s worth of whatever it is the car needs to run on, so the new owner doesn’t have to do the “must fill petrol” bit for his/her first act with the car? Intimacy is one thing, but can you allow us a bit of time before penetration with a gas nozzle takes place?

RON97 petrol up 20 sen to record high of RM2.90

PETALING JAYA: The price of premium RON97 petrol will be increased by 20 sen to a record high of RM2.90 per litre from Thursday.

"The price of RON97 fluctuates as the Government has lifted the subsidy for this petrol," Malaysian Petrol Dealers Association president Datuk Hashim Othman said Wednesday when confirming the price increase.

The previous increase was a month ago.

"The price of RON97 might go down in future, but this depends on the political situation in the Middle East as well as natural disasters," he added.

Subsidised RON95 petrol and diesel prices remain unchanged.

Bank Negara wants lower insurance costs for old vehicles

PETALING JAYA: Owners of cars and motorcycles that are 10 years or older will now be able to get insurance coverage without having to pay a loading of 200% to 300%.

This follows a new Bank Negara ruling for all insurance companies to provide coverage with immediate effect.

They are no longer allowed to implement loading fees provided the vehicles are roadworthy.

In an announcement which takes effect immediately, Bank Negara said the vehicles concerned had previously been grouped as “displaced vehicles” or deemed high-risk vehicles.

“Those with displaced vehicles that are currently underwritten by the Malaysian Motor Insurance Pool will no longer be subjected to the loading imposed on high-risk vehicles,” said a Bank Negara statement yesterday.

It added that these vehicles would only be required to undergo annual roadworthiness checks at Puspakom.

Malaysian Rubber Likely To Trade Weaker

Rubber prices likely to be lower next week.

KUALA LUMPUR, April 30 (Bernama) -- Lack of demand especially from China due to its high level of rubber inventory is likely to drag prices in Malaysia down next week.

Thailand also was selling their latex at lower prices compared to the market here, a dealer said.
Rising supply from major rubber producing countries could also put pressure on prices, he added.

This week, the Malaysian Rubber Board's official daily physical price for tyre-grade SMR 20 dropped 114.5 sen to 1,363.5 sen per kg from 1,478 per kg while latex-in-bulk fell 43.5 sen to 985.5 sen per kg from 1,029.0 sen per kg.

Meanwhile, the unofficial price for tyre-grade SMR 20 fell 105.0 sen to 1,365.0 sen per kg from 1,470.0 sen per kg and latex-in-bulk slipped 43.0 sen to 982.0 sen per kg from 1,025.0 sen per kg.

The market will close on Monday due to Labour Day holiday.

Install in-car camera, get cheaper insurance

KUALA LUMPUR: An insurance company in Singapore has launched the first scheme to reward customers who install a camera in their car.

Online insurer DirectAsia.com will offer its customers a reduced premium if they equip their car with a special camera that takes continual footage of their journey. In the event of an accident, the recorded evidence will enable insurers to settle claims fast and fairly.

"This will protect the good driver from having to share liability when there is not sufficient evidence to determine who is at fault at the time of the accident," said DirectAsia.com principal officer Nicolas Faquet.

Customers will also get a heavily discounted price on the VisionDrive Black Box camera which features a shock sensor, GPS sensor, and Video Analyzer.

DirectAsia.com began operations in June last year and provides car, travel, home and personal accident insurance through its online portal. It is licensed and regulated by the Monetary Authority of Singapore.

DirectAsia.com is fully owned by the Whittington Group, an international insurance investment business based in Singapore, and is supported by Munich Re, a leading reinsurer.

Summonses with photo ‘evidence’ from May 1

From May 1, police will issue summonses with photographs of vehicles violating traffic regulations in areas monitored by closed-circuit television.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar said the new procedure would be used for all traffic offences including speeding and failure to use seat belts.

He said he expected the practice to leave little chance of mistaken identity.

“If there are still people who claim that police got the wrong vehicle (even with a picture attached to the summons), they should produce evidence of the mistake at any traffic counter,” he told reporters here.

In areas without CCTV surveillance, Khalid said summonses would be issued as usual by traffic officers.

He also said stern action would be taken against any police personnel found to have refused to accept a report from a member of the public.

Khalid said top police management had received many complaints about policemen refusing to take reports from the public.

This errant behaviour was discussed in the Delivery Task Force meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin in Putrajaya yesterday, he said.

JPJ lifts blacklist on drivers and vehicles with ‘saman ekor’

First, no more hidden speed trap ambushes from the cops, and now this – according to reports, the JPJ has announced that drivers or owners who have been blacklisted based on summons received through the post are now free to renew their road tax and driving licences.

The announcement of the lifting of the ‘saman ekor’ blacklist was made by JPJ deputy director-general Datuk Ismail Ahmad, and follows on the earlier announcement made by Deputy Transport Minister Jelaing Mersat a few days ago on the matter.

The reports quoted the minister as saying that drivers or vehicle owners who have commited traffic offences but with cases that have not been taken to court will no longer be prevented from renewing their driving and vehicle licences. The blacklist, however, is still in effect for cases that are pending in court or under investigation.

Last year, a total of 119,330 driving licences and 154,663 motor vehicle licences were blacklisted in Malaysia, while in 2009, the number was 122,794 for driving licences and 180,624 for vehicle licences, the reports add. So, sounds like good cheer, and does it have anything to do with it being an important year, one wonders. Any thoughts on the matter?

BLMClub MEGA Gathering 2011 @ Putra Heights

A huge Blmclub session was held recently on 19/02/2011 in Putra Heights and a total of 114 Proton Saga BLM cars were recorded in attendance. Members travelled as far as Melaka and Seremban to attend this mega convoy and imagine a carpark full of Proton Saga BLM cars? This is as remarkable as anyone could ever imagine.

The group proceeded to a nearby mamak for the Teh Tarik session and it looked like a scene taken from an underground rival gang movie with members in their black and red outfits.

The event also featured a spectacular auto show showcasing a drag-inspired car that was also the highlight of the day because of the immense modifications the car has undergone.

The night ended on a high note and will be one of the most monumental events for Blmclub.

Mission accomplished!

Proton Saga SE R3 Concept

What we have here is a customized Saga SE R3 by reader Kamarul XY. He wanted an R3-ized Saga so much that he just went ahead to a fiber custom workshop in Sunway and specified a custom job combining the top half of the original Saga bumper and the bottom half of the Satria Neo R3 bumper.

As for the rest of the parts, it was obtained off the shelf – spoiler, rims, etc. The R3 effect was completed with R3 stickers and plaques, including the MME sticker that was on the R3 MME edition Waja and GEN2 cars.

GOOD NEWS FOR BLMCLUB MEMBERS,

Spinz is a company that does after market bodykit for cars. At the mean time they are focusing on Saga BLM body. Spinz owner use to do design for R3 Neo / R3 Club Sport / Bla bla bla.

Few weeks ago, we held a meeting in motorsport playground to talk about sponsorship on 5 of blmclub cars to put on the new Spinz bodykit for Saga BLM for free. but there are a few conditions that needs to be met before your car is chosen.

They got 2 types of body kit which is,

1) 90 degree body kit. its an add on of front lip / side skirt / rear lip and spoiler.

2) 180 degree body kit. FULL bodykit change. Side front fender / Front bumper / Back bumper / Side skirt.

But only one lucky person will get the 180 degree body kit change and 4 of them will only get 90 degree change

The conditions / requirements are as followed.

1) Exhaust system must be stock. Meaning the muffle is stock

2) Must be available at all Auto show that has been scheduled by Spinz (not all auto shows only once a month or at most twice a month) If your not available u need to ask some1 to send your car there. If u miss 2 auto shows u will need to pay for the entire set of the spinz bodykit w/o questions

3) Must be a BLMCLUB member with blmclub sticker at the back of the windscreen and sticker numbering

4) Must be a stock car that has no bodykit. unless ur willing to take off ur old kit at ur own cost

5) Contract needs to be sign before proceed

Government think tank proposes fuel hikes – 15 sen this year and RON95 to cost RM2.60 by 2015

PEMANDU, a government think tank led by Minister in Prime Minister’s Department Idris Jala tasked with formulating proposals to reduce the country’s government subsidy budget has recommended a petrol price hike of 15 sen for RON95 and 10 sen for diesel.

This is the petrol price hike schedule which we’ll be looking at, based on a crude oil forecast of US$73.06 per barrel in 2011 and the region of between US$79.41 to US$94.52 per barrel between 2013 and 2015.

▪ Current 2010 Price – RM1.80 per liter RON95

▪ Q3/Q4 2010 Price Hike – RM1.95 per liter RON95

▪ 2011 Price Hike – RM2.16 per liter RON95 (broken into 2 hikes, once per 6 months)

▪ 2012 Price Hike – RM2.20 per liter RON95

▪ 2013 Price Hike – RM2.34 per liter RON95

▪ 2014 Price Hike – RM2.52 per liter RON95

▪ 2015 Price Hike – RM2.60 per liter RON95

These are just the proposed hikes for RON95. RON97 was not mentioned in the recommendations, which indicates that the government is further decreasing priority on RON97 subsidies. We could see a price of way over RM3 per liter for RON97 by 2015.

Not only that, the proposal recommends that the government renegotiate the PLUS toll concession contract this year and the LDP contract by 2013, then all toll concession agreements must proceed without any subsidies, resulting in a toll hike of between 10% to 67% depending on the highway, distance, etc from this year onwards.

For those dreaming of a future of driving electric cars, electricity tariffs are to be untouched for those using less than 200 kWh for this year. However gas prices are proposed to be increased by RM3/MMBTU every 6 months, which will translate to an electricity increased of 1.6 sen/kWh every 6 months. If we take the Nissan Leaf’s 24kWh battery as an example, that’s a RM0.38 hike per full charge for the Nissan Leaf every 6 months. LPG, which is priced at RM24.50 has been proposed to be hiked to RM27 with a 20% price increase every year.

According to PEMANDU this will save the government about 3 billion ringgit this year, 14 billion ringgit next year, 21 billion ringgit in 2012, 29.5 billion ringgit in 2013 and 35 billion ringgit in 2014. These plans are yet to be approved by the government.

Start from 8pm to 9pm we BLMClub met in Caltex Greenlane, after 9:10pm the BLMClub convoy starts moving to the Second destination to meet up with the rest of the Clubs and the big convoy begins to the next destination, tanjung tokong foodcourt for dinner. At 10pm Murky Club joined the TT. After all the dinner and chit chatting, we did some photo shots
